Argelès Beaches

Argeles is a must visit for its most incredible sandy beach, which stretches over 7km of coastline. Not only that, but the sea is actually very clean to swim! Each year, Argelès receives the blue flag for its clean beaches and was also one of the first towns in France to adopt the Meractive process for environmentally friendly sand cleaning back from 1989 onwards.

There are two beaches to visit namely Argelès-Plage and Le Racou beaches.

Argelès Beach

Known for its fine golden sand, clear turquoise waters and stunning views of the nearby Albera Massif hills and Collioure,  Argelès Beach is wide and spacious, offering plenty of room for sunbathers, families and those looking to enjoy a peaceful seaside stroll.

The beach is divided into several sections:

Plage Centrale, the main section, is the liveliest, with a promenade lined with shops, restaurants, and cafés making it a convenient spot for visitors looking for amenities. It is also well-equipped with sunbeds, parasols, and lifeguard stations, which operate during the summer months.

Plage Sud is a quieter, more natural stretch, ideal for those seeking a more relaxed and quieter environment.

Plage Nord is less crowded and great for long beach walks or a more peaceful sunbathing experience.

Is Argelès safe for children?

The sea here is relatively shallow near the shore, making it suitable for families with young children. However, it’s important to note that the beach slopes away quickly in some areas, so children should be closely supervised when paddling or swimming.

The beach is supervised by lifeguards, with six lifeguard posts ensuring swimmer safety. Lifeguards are on duty from 1st May to 29th September providing extra reassurance during the peak summer months.

There are also designated accessible beach areas with ramps and special walkways for wheelchair users.

While lifeguards enhance safety, parents should always remain attentive, as sea conditions can change. By following safety guidelines and staying within the monitored areas, families can enjoy a safe and relaxing beach experience at Argelès.

What activities can I do on Argelès Beach?

Argelès Beach offers a variety of watersports including jet skiing, paddleboarding, windsurfing and sailing. Several beach clubs provide equipment rental and lessons for beginners.

Snorkelling and scuba diving are popular near the rocky coves of Le Racou, where marine life is more abundant.

Boat trips also depart from the beach and marina, offering excursions to Collioure, dolphin-watching tours and sunset cruises.

Finally, a well-maintained promenade runs alongside the beach, perfect for walking, jogging or cycling while enjoying the sea breeze.

Le Racou Beach

Hidden away south of Argelès is local’s favourite, Racou Beach, and it’s not difficult to understand why. It’s quiet, less commercialised and has an old fashioned sleepy charm to it.

Located on the foothills of the Albère hills, the hamlet of Racou overlooks the beach and was founded in the 1920s as a few wooden cabins for bathers. After the Second World War, Racou was developed and gradually took on the appearance it has today, but it’s still very different from Argelès – it’s like a little village with a family atmosphere where locals come to relax and enjoy the sun.

Further down past the beach are a series of coves and a footpath leading all the way to Collioure through Porteil Cove and Ouille Beach.
