The Argelès Museum, located in the heart of the old town, above the church, on Place des Castellans, was founded in 1985, by a group of local historians, who wanted to tell the rich history of Argeles and the Albères mountains.

Housed in one of Argeles original old buildings, the Argeles Museum tells the story of Argeles main trades including cork making, whip making and espadrilles, as well as local traditions, craftsmanship and landscapes including olive groves and vineyards.

Normal opening hours are: January to June - Monday to Friday: 9:30am-12:00pm & 2-5pm; July to September - Monday to Saturday: 10:00am-1:00pm & 2-6pm; October to December - Monday to Friday: 9:30am-12pm & 2-5pm. Tickets cost €2 for adults and free for children under 18.

Oniria Aquarium

La Ferme de Découverte Saint-André

La Ferme de Découverte Saint-André is a family-friendly animal park offering an immersive farm experience just a few minutes from Argelès-sur-Mer. Spanning over 300 animals, the farm allows visitors to get up close with a variety of species including sheep, goats, llamas, ponies and pigs.

Réserve Africaine de Sigean Safari Experience

Cloister of Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines

15 minutes drive from Argelès is the Cloister of Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines, part of a former Benedictine abbey, founded around 780 during the time of Charlemagne, and dedicated to Saint Genis, a Christian martyr. The abbey has undergone several architectural transformations, notably in the 9th and 12th centuries, before its cloister was completed in the 13th century.

Today, the southeast quarter of the cloister remains intact in very good condition and has been classified as a historic monument. Restoration efforts from 1970 to 2002 saw the return of some of its original sculptures, and the space now also serves as a gallery for temporary exhibitions. The cloister features a covered walkway linking different monastic buildings and is adorned with intricate iconography. The Abbey Church of Saint-Michel, attached to the cloister, is home to one of the oldest Romanesque sculpted lintels dated from 1020.

The Cloister of Saint-Génis-des-Fontaines is open Monday to Saturday (and Sundays in July–August), generally from around 9:30 AM to 12 PM and 2 PM to 5 PM. Entry costs €4 for adults, €3 for reduced rates (students, disabled, job seekers, over 12s), and is free for children under 12. Group visits start at €3 per person, with guided tours at €5.

Collioure’s Le Petit Train

Ok, this might be a cheesy way to see Collioure, but hear me out, OK?

Le Petit Train goes places that you’ll never reach and never see unless you’ve got a car and the will to find these spots!

For children, of course, it’s no brainer and they will love Le Petit Train, but for adults too, it really is an underated way of explore the picturesque landscapes of Collioure and Port-Vendres.

Highlights of the tour include a stop at Fort Saint-Elme for breathtaking views and a route that passes through Port-Vendres, where passengers can enjoy the coastal and vineyard vistas, as well as brief stopa at the quays of Port Vendres before returning to Collioure.

Operating for over three decades, this tourist train was recently taken over by Jean-Louis Bros, and reasonably priced at 8€ per person, with free entry for children under four. The train operates from late March to the end of October, making it a seasonal attraction that captures the essence of the Côte Vermeille, so don’t give it a miss!

The 45-minute journey showcases the region's vineyards and historical monuments with audio commentary available in Dutch, German, Russian, Spanish, Italian, English and French.

It’s also now entered the 21st century and is officially safe - by reducing its capacity to 50% and installing compartmentalized wagons to accommodate mobility-restricted passengers, so you’ll be in safe hands.

For trainspotters, you’ll be interested to know that Le Petit Train is equipped with environmentally friendly technology including a 200 horsepower Euro 6D engine and four-wheel drive necessary for navigating the steep and challenging terrain of the Côte Vermeille.
