My name is Christophe and I personally visited all of Argelès’ campsites reviewed here. Click on the dropdown to jump to the campsite you’d like to read about or simply scroll down the page. I hope this is useful for you. All the photos and views are my own.
Mention the word Argelès to most French people and they will immediately say the word ‘camping’. What makes Argelès different is its natural beauty, low-rise developments and pine forests, planted to to stabilize the dunes, which create a camping environment that seamlessly blends comfort with nature.
Camping began as early as the 1930s when wild campers discovered the area and started setting up tents on farm land close to the beach. Farmers started building little huts for campers to wash and, by the 1950s, the beaches of Argelès began to transform. But, it was really in the the 1960s and 70s that saw the rise of the “hôtellerie de plein air”, a uniquely French style of camping that emphasized blending nature with comfort.
Today, camping has become the lifeblood of Argelès-sur-Mer’s economy with over 50 campsites and over 13,500 pitches catering to all kinds of travellers from basic tent sites to luxurious mobile homes and caravan spaces.
About 90% of pitches are reserved for tents and caravans, but modern developments have introduced five-star accommodations complete with water parks, restaurants and entertainment.
Campsites generate significant revenue, providing jobs for locals and boosting nearby businesses, from restaurants to outdoor adventure providers. A forthcoming economic report is expected to highlight the full extent of this contribution, which is already estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands of euros annually.
Bouix Camping Argelès Review
My quick campsite review for those in a hurry:
The first campsite ever built in Argelès, Bouix Camping is a three-star campsite just 100 metres from the beach and close to the action and lots of restaurants and bars for you to enjoy.
My Review of Bouix Argelès Campsite
Av. Général de Gaulle, 66700 Argelès-sur-Mer
Strolling in on a warm summer’s day, I was greeted by Sophie Bouix, the 3rd generation manager of the campsite who told me all about her family history. Her family has been farming hay and vegetables since the Middle Ages.
By the late 1940s, they start discovering people wild camping on their land as the era of paid holiday began in Europe. Initially, they were rather upset and weren’t sure what to do, but then hit upon the idea of building a couple of huts and a shower and toilers using water from the well.
And the rest is history. The Bouix campsite offers 68 pitches providing ample space for tents, caravans or motorhomes, as well as mobile home rentals equipped with private bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor seating areas. On-site amenities include a heated swimming pool maintained at 26°C, a jacuzzi and paddling pool for children.
The campsite also includes a children's playground, barbecue facilities and offers services such as laundry with washing machines and dryers. Wi-Fi is available throughout the site and safety deposit boxes can be rented for securing valuables.
The cost for renting a mobile home ranges from €250 to €1,170 per week, depending on the season and type of accommodation. For traditional camping pitches, the rate for two adults with one car starts from €19 to €56 per day.
As regards to entertainment, there is none and that’s exactly how they prefer it. As sophie told me, “this is a traditional old fashioned campsite to enjoy the nature, enjoy your holiday and meet other likeminded people. We have lots of regulars who keep coming back year after year and it’s little like a big family”.
Camping Bouix operates seasonally, with the upcoming season running from 1st May 2025 to 27th September 2025.
What I liked about Bouix Argelès Campsite:
I loved Sophie and the Bouix campsite’s history and she’s right, it’s a classic tried and tested campsite. I liked the cleaniliness of the bathroom and shower facilities, but perhaps most of all I liked the quiet and the natural surroundings. It was calm, serene and relaxing. The location is also great. It’s so close to the beach, restaurants and entertainment.
What I liked less about Bouix Argelès Campsite:
This campsite is hard to fault. From my side, I think it’s a pity that it closes so early as October is also a nice month in this area.
Catalan Campsite Argelès Review
My quick campsite review for those in a hurry:
The 2nd campsite established in Argelès in the 1950s, Catalan Campsite is another well established Argelès camping heavyweight with a loyal regular clientele who keep coming back.
My Review of Catalan Argelès Campsite
Av. Général de Gaulle, 66700 Argelès-sur-Mer
Like the Bouix Campsite, Catalan Camping, right opposite the Bouix, is proud of its heritage. I spoke with Cecile, a third generation manager from the same family that founded the campsite back in the 1950s.
Her Great Grandfather was born in Figures and emigrated from Spain to get away from Franco where he met her Great Grandmother who born in the famous hospital at Château d'en Bardou in Elne rented by a Swiss Nurse, Elisabeth Eidenbenz, who converted it into a maternity hospital between 1939 and 1944 and where 595 children were born to mothers of different nationalities and faiths.
Camping Catalan is a two-star family-friendly campsite located just 150 metres from the beach and close to many good restaurants and bars.
The campsite features 71 pitches suitable for tents, caravans, and motorhomes up to 7 metres in length. Each pitch is shaded, clearly demarcated and equipped with standard European 8 Amp electrical connections. There are also 32 mobile homes available for rent, accommodating between 2 to 5 people, with options for integrated bathroom facilities.
Facilities include access to hot water at all stations, dedicated children's bathrooms and disabled bathroosm. Additional services comprise a reception area offering telephone, fax, internet, and Wi-Fi access, as well as safety deposit box rentals and a freezer for ice-pack refreezing.
Camping Catalan operates seasonally from 5th May to 30th September 2025, allowing guests to enjoy the warm Mediterranean climate during the spring and summer months.
What I liked about Catalan Argelès Campsite:
There’s a lot of shade with so many trees, which both provides comfort from the heat, but also feels a bit like you’re in a forest close to the sea. Everything seems very well organised, hardly surprising I guess since they’ve been in business for so long, and the facilities are clean. I also got on well with Cecile and could see the passion and care for her guests shine through.
What I liked less about Catalan Argelès Campsite:
Why on earth do they close so early? I was visiting at the end of September and the campsite was practically full.
Europe Campsite Argelès Review
My quick campsite review for those in a hurry:
Camping Europe is a well-maintained campsite on tranquil and shaded land not far from the beach with a nice pool and sun lounger terrace.
My Review of Europe Argelès Campsite
Av. Général de Gaulle, 66700 Argelès-sur-Mer
I wasn’t able to learn the history of Camping Europe as the Managers were so busy and they really did try and sit down for a meeting, but each time a guest arrived needing something, so I was sadly unable to interview them, but they did allow me free rein to wander the campsite.
The campsite provides spacious and shaded pitches suitable for tents, caravans and motorhomes. Modern sanitary facilities are maintained to a high standard, ensuring cleanliness and comfort for all guests. A notable feature is the pleasant swimming pool area, which includes a jacuzzi and a children's paddling pool, catering to both relaxation and family fun.
Its prime location near the beach and town centre, combined with high-standard facilities and a welcoming atmosphere making it an excellent choice for those seeking a pleasant stay in Argelès-sur-Mer.
Camping Europe operates seasonally, typically welcoming guests from late April through September.
What I liked about Europe Argelès Campsite:
Though I didn’t get to chat properly with the Managers, they were clearly friendly, open and did want to help with this project. The pitches are a nice size and larger than some others I’ve visited and set in a leafy field and well ordered. Everything is clean, quiet and professional.
What I liked less about Europe Argelès Campsite:
It’s a few minutes further walk to the beach than some other campsites, but really not far and gives you a little exercise after a long lunch.
La Chapelle Campsite Argelès Review
My quick campsite review for those in a hurry:
La Chapelle has got a bit of everything: lots of camping options including motorhomes with air/conditioning, a large waterpark covering 2000 square metres and is just 200 metres from the sea.
My Review of La Chapelle Argelès Campsite
I think Europe Argelès Campsite has some of the most choice on offer in Argelès: you’ve got pitches for motorhomes aplenty, then a range of motorhomes for every taste ranging from Classic, Comfort and Premium options.
One of the standout features of La Chapelle is its extensive water park covering over 2,000 square metres and includes heated outdoor pools, an indoor pool, water slides and a paddling pool for children.
It’s very easy to see why people keep coming back to stay at La Chapelle. The Managers said that they have a high rate of guests coming back every year. After all, the campsites got a snack bar, a boulangerie offering fresh bread and pastries and the Buddha Bar where guests can relax with a drink on the terrace. Furthermore, there’s a laundromat, fitness room and a kid's club (1 June to 31 August) and free Wi-Fi. La Chapelle operates from 4 April to 5 October 2025.
Something that differentiates La Chapelle from a lot of other Argelès campsites is all the activities on offer. See below a small sample of a typical week at La Chapelle:
Aquagym – A morning water aerobics session in the pool to start the day with some movement.
Marvilla Dance – An evening dance session for guests to enjoy lively music and movement.
Marvilla Apéro Cocktail Game – A fun aperitif game in the afternoon, likely involving cocktails and social interaction.
Pétanque – A classic French bowling game, held in the afternoons and a tournament on Sundays.
Volleyball, guided walks & team sports games – regularly.
Visitors to La Chapelle have praised the campsite for its cleanliness, friendly staff, and excellent location. One reviewer noted, "The campsite itself is clean and tidy, and the pool area is very well maintained."
What I liked about La Chapelle Argelès Campsite:
Location! Location! Location! It’s nicely located for the beach, bars and restaurants.
I also like the range of activities on offer – there’s so much to do – and it’s easy to stay active.
What I liked less about La Chapelle Argelès Campsite:
It has lots on offer and is in high demand, so prices during the High Season can be higher than others, but you get what you pay for. So, in this sense, in terms of all the facilities and activities, it’s good value.
Le Bois de Valmarie Argelès Campsite Review
My quick campsite review for those in a hurry:
Nestled on the heights of Le Racou beach, a stone’s throw away from Argelès, Le Bois de Valmarie campsite offers a tranquil setting close to the Mediterranean and offers mobile homes and pitches for tents and caravans – many with sea views.
My Review of Le Bois de Valmarie Argelès Campsite
Avenue Torre d'en Sorre, 66700 Argelès-sur-Mer
Le Racou is one of my favourite places to visit, so it’s hard not to be a little biased about La Bois de Valmarie. The step terraced layout of La Bois de Valmarie ensures that many plots benefit from sea views. On the flip side, it’s a long walk to Argelès, so if you want to visit lots of bars and restaurants, it’s either a hike, bike or car ride over to get there.
Accommodation-wise, Le Bois de Valmarie has got it all from bare plots of tents to luxurious motorhomes with air conditioning, fully equipped kitchens and private terraces.
What differentiates La Bois de Valmarie is its facilities, activities and being in Le Racou.
Let’s start with facilities: you’ve got a tropical-themed heated water park featuring lagoon pools connected by waterfalls water slides, and paddling areas for children. There’s a wellness area including sauna, jacuzzi. Finally, there’s a proper restaurant serving a variety of local dishes, as well as a cocktail bar.
There’s also a lot of activities to get stuck into: for parents, there’s a kid’s club every day; and sport-wise, you can do aquaerobics, aquabike sessions, archery, pétanque and water polo, as well as offsite paid options including including scuba diving, sea kayaking, mountain biking and sailing courses.
Camping Le Bois de Valmarie typically operates from mid-April to late September.
What I liked about Le Bois de Valmarie Argelès Campsite:
This feels a bit more like a resort than a campsite. I liked the restaurant and really think that more campsites should put in the effort to offer proper dining options instead of just snack bars. It’s also very clean and well-maintained with plenty of staff to look after you.
The facilities, particularly the waterpark, and the activities are the cherry on top. Add to the fact that it’s in Le Racou and this makes Le Bois de Valmarie one of my more preferred campsites in Argelès.
What I liked less about Le Bois de Valmarie Argelès Campsite:
I think its seclusion can be both a positive and negative. For me, it’s a positive. But, for others, particularly if they don’t know that it’s located outside of Argelès, this may not be a welcome surprise.
Le Roussillonnais Argelès Campsite Review
My quick campsite review for those in a hurry:
Nestled in an 11-hectare pine forest, Le Roussillon is located directly off the beach providing guests with the unique experience of having their "feet in the water”, yet it’s just a few hundred metres from the restaurants and bars of Argelès.
My Review of Le Roussillonnais Argelès Campsite
Boulevard de la Mer, 66702 Argelès-sur-Mer
One of the founding campsites of Argelès and set in an absolutely beautiful setting: the sound of the sea is not far off, the swaying of the pines overhead and it’s very tranquil.
Yet, at the same time Le Roussillonnais has a lot more to offer than it’s beautiful location. It’s like a little village within Argeles with its own world - a bar and restaurant serving local and international cuisine in a relaxed setting; a well-stocked grocery store offering daily essentials and fresh produce; a laundry with washing machines and dryers for guest use.
Accomodation-wise, Le Roussillonnais has its all: modern mobile homes, chalets (that tastefully blend into the natural environment) and traditional pitches for tents, caravans or camper vans, equipped with electrical connections. Camping Le Roussillonnais is open from 4 April to 2 November.
There’s also a lot to do for those who are more active. For the sportier of you, there’s a tennis court, pétanque area and a multi-sports ground, which includes regular sporting tournaments. Then, in the evening, for the night owls, there’s karaoke nights, themed parties and live performances.
For children, there’s a really nice modern playground and a kid’s club and easy access to the lifeguard protected parts of Argelès beach.
What I liked about Le Roussillonnais Argelès Campsite:
The pine forest, its location and its size is what makes Le Roussillonnais stand out. I find that you get different vibes from each campsite that you visit. Since its such a large site and the fact that most guests are respectful of each other and aren’t too loud, it means that there’s a natural tranquillity about the campsite. I was visiting in late autumn, but I imagine that even during the hot summer months, it will have a leisurely chilled out feel.
I also like the fact that, at least it felt to me, that the plots had a little more space, though it might have been just because it’s such a large campsite.
For kids, I think it would be a great place because they have a large range of activities on offer and the beach is right on your doorstep!
What I liked less about Le Roussillonnais Argelès Campsite:
There’s really a lot to like about Le Roussillonnais, but its location and size could be less ideal for those are less mobile since it’s a large place to walk about and it’s about a 1km from the main stretch of bars and restaurants (though there are bars and restaurants much close than that).

Les Criques de Porteils Campsite Review
My quick campsite review for those in a hurry:
Located on the road between Argelès and Collioure, so not strictly in Argelès, I would say Le Criques de Porteils is the most luxurious campsite in the area.
My Review of Les Criques de Porteils Argelès Campsite
RD114, Rte de Collioure, 66700 Argelès-sur-Mer, France
Cathy, the wife of Laurent Raspaud, the manager of Les Criques de Porteils, showed me around the six-hectare campsite and we enjoyed a coffee while I learned more about its history.
My first impression was that this was no ordinary campsite—it felt like a luxury resort. The cleanliness, high standards and commitment to service were exceptional, reminiscent of a boutique hotel. As a member of the Leading Campings of Europe chain, Les Criques is among the most beautiful campsites in Europe.
Les Criques offers a range of accommodation, from spacious tent and caravan pitches to premium mobile homes and cottages with air conditioning, modern kitchens and private terraces.
The facilities are outstanding with a heated swimming pool, wellness area, sports field, restaurant, bar and a well-stocked shop. Thoughtful amenities, such as clean, modern toilet blocks, a laundry and EV charging points, add to the convenience. Sustainability is also a priority, with recycling facilities, energy-saving initiatives and eco-lodges built with environmentally friendly materials.
Originally established in 1964 as a traditional campsite, Les Criques was transformed after Laurent Raspaud took over in 2005. Coming from a Catalan family with a history in campsite management, he elevated the site to offer a high-end experience while preserving its natural beauty.
Spacious, well-designed pitches cater to those with caravans, campervans, and tents, ensuring a balance between traditional camping and modern comforts. As Cathy put it, "We combine traditional camping, modernity, and service." Activities are plentiful, with free children’s clubs, paddleboarding, yoga, tennis, mini-golf, pétanque, and guided walks.
For those seeking relaxation, the wellness area offers massages and haircuts, while the restaurant serves meals throughout the day. The mix of guests is international, and the multilingual staff ensures a welcoming experience. With many repeat visitors returning year after year, it’s easy to see why Les Criques de Porteils is a standout choice for both adventure and tranquility.
What I liked about Le Criques de Porteils Argelès Campsite:
The campsite offers a luxury experience with exceptional cleanliness, high standards, and a strong commitment to quality service. The stunning sea views fresh air, and peaceful atmosphere create a perfect setting for relaxation.
The variety of accommodation options, from spacious pitches to premium cottages, ensures there is something for everyone; and the excellent facilities, including a heated pool, wellness area, sports activities and a great restaurant, make the stay both comfortable and enjoyable. Finally, the friendly, multilingual staff and welcoming atmosphere contribute to a truly memorable and stress-free holiday experience.
What I liked less about Le Criques de Porteils Argelès Campsite:
The absence of evening entertainment or social events may not suit those looking for a livelier atmosphere. While the premium accommodation is excellent, it comes at a higher price compared to other campsites.
Finally, the rocky coastline means there’s no direct sandy beach, so beach lovers may need to walk or drive to nearby spots. It’s also not in Argelès as such, but about a ten minute drive away.

Les Amandiers Argelès Campsite Review
My quick campsite review for those in a hurry:
Again, not strictly in Argelès, but on the road between Argelès and Collioure, a small unassuming road leads to Les Amandiers, a hidden gem of a campsite nestled in rural countryside yet within walking distance of the secluded Ouille Beach and just a short hike to Collioure.
My Review of Les Amandiers Argelès Campsite
Route des Campings 66190 Collioure
This perfect balance of nature and convenience makes it an ideal spot for a peaceful getaway. A classic traditional campsite, Les Amandiers has 80 pitches for tents, campervans and caravans, plus 16 bungalows shaded by trees and vegetation.
The bungalows, positioned above the campsite, offer sea views and come well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Despite its simplicity, the campsite provides essential facilities including clean sanitary blocks, a laundry, a grocery store and a restaurant & bar.
There are also activities such as kayaking and tennis, and a dedicated play area for children. While it may not have as many amenities as larger campsites, Les Amandiers prioritises tranquillity and its natural surroundings, which adds to its charm. Even during peak season, the atmosphere remained calm and respectful, fostering a real sense of community.
So, for those seeking a simple, serene escape surrounded by natural beauty, this hidden gem on the Côte Vermeille is well worth discovering.
What I liked about Les Amandiers Argelès Campsite:
The peaceful, rural setting offers a perfect balance of nature and convenience with easy access to Ouille Beach and Collioure. The campsite has a charming, unpretentious feel, staying true to the essence of classic camping while still providing essential comforts.
The well-shaded pitches and elevated bungalows with sea views create a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. Even during peak season, the campsite remained quiet and respectful, fostering a welcoming and community-like environment. Indeed, the focus on simplicity and tranquillity makes it an ideal spot for a relaxing holiday surrounded by natural beauty.
What I liked less about Les Amandiers Argelès Campsite:
The campsite has fewer amenities compared to larger sites, so those looking for extensive facilities might find it a bit basic. While the location is beautiful, the narrow access road can be tricky to navigate, especially for larger vehicles. The restaurant and grocery store are convenient but have a limited selection, so you may need to shop and eat elsewhere for more variety.

La Coste Rouge Argelès Campsite Review
My quick campsite review for those in a hurry:
Located on the coastal road between Argelès and Collioure, the location of La Coste Rouge makes it perfect for day trips to Le Racou, Argelès or Collioure and it’s large with plenty of choice.
My Review of La Coste Rouge Argelès Campsite
2556 Rte de Collioure, 66700 Argelès-sur-Mer, France
Spread over four hectares, La Coste Rouge offers 180 pitches including over 100 mobile homes some of which are designed for disabled access.
The range of accommodation is impressive from simple camping pitches to fully equipped mobile homes with kitchens and terraces. The site is well-shaded with lush tree cover, creating a comfortable and natural setting.
Facilities are a highlight, with a swimming pool, water slides, a heated pool and a paddling pool for younger children. There’s also a Kid’s Club and a playground making it particularly family-friendly. In addition, the on-site shop and restaurant provide convenience meanig guests have everything they need for a relaxing stay.
With its excellent location, spacious layout, and great facilities, La Coste Rouge is a fantastic option for those looking for easy access to both Collioure and Argelès while enjoying a well-equipped campsite.
What I liked about La Coste Rouge Argelès Campsite:
The easy access and spacious layout make it a great choice for those with larger caravans or motorhomes and location between Argelès and Collioure, as well as its proximity to Racou Beach, makes it perfect for day trips.
The excellent family-friendly facilities including swimming pools, water slides and a Kid’s Club ensure a fun stay for all ages. The on-site shop and restaurant provide everything needed for a relaxing holiday without having to leave the campsite.
What I liked less about La Coste Rouge Argelès Campsite:
Being close to the main road, there can be some traffic noise, especially during peak season. Also, the campsite is quite large, so depending on where your pitch or mobile home is, you may have a bit of a walk to the main facilities.
Whilst the on-site shop and restaurant are convenient, the selection is somewhat limited, so you may need to shop elsewhere for more variety and that will involve a drive as it’s quite far from the centre of Argelès.
